Swirling vortices of warmer water can be seen calving off the northern side of the Gulf Stream. Western nations of northern Europe depend on this conveyor of solar energy to maintain the mild climate allowing agriculture at latitudes beyond 60 degrees north. The clearer picture of Ozone depletion around the polar areas is just one area where satellites have provided hitherto impossible global montages of the atmospheric chemistry of certain components of our atmosphere. As Hurricane Rita advanced towards the oil and gas installations of the Gulf of Mexico global energy prices surged as many oil production and refining installations had to be shut down for safety reasons. Satellite data of global sea temperatures showing how the dark warm tropical sea water is carried up into northern latitudes in all oceans.
