A bronze pelton wheel from a 1KW Harris pico-hydro generator. This design is ideal for low volume, high head situations. The large and quickly available energy storage capacity of Pump Storage reservoirs, such as this one at Dinorwig, Wales, mean they are sought after components for any grid system. However, suitable high head locations for such installations are rare. In 1935 when Franklin D. Roosevelt celebrated the harnessing of the Colorado River by the Hoover Dam it was the largest concrete structure in the world. Since then even more ambitious projects have been built. China’s Three Gorges Dam will have a total output of 22.4GW when fully complete. It is a key component in China’s ambitions to unite the water and energy systems of the Yangtze and the Yellow River Basins.
